What you need to know

To properly dispose of used oil products at a depot, follow these guidelines:

1. Collect the used oil from your vehicle, lawnmower, farm equipment or other machinery and place it in its original container.

2. Do not contaminate the oil with other liquids. Solvents, paint thinner, bleaches, antifreeze, gasoline, PCBs, household chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, grease or water are not accepted. Go to the HHW page to find out what to do with contaminated oil or other hazardous wastes.

3. Place the filters in a clean container.

4. Return your used oil materials to the nearest collection depot during operating hours. Most importantly, please tell others about the important service offered by these facilities!

Give used oil products new life

Knowing what happens to materials after you recycle them helps you understand why recycling is important. There are many products that can be made from used oil materials.

  • Refining used oil can completely restore it's lubricating properties so that it can be used again as oil in your car again.
  • Recycled oil is also used extensively in the production of asphalt for roads and highways. It can also be burned for energy.
  • Oil filters are shredded, heated to a molten state and the metals re-used as material for other metal products such as rebar, nails and wire.
  • Empty plastic oil bottles can be recycled into new containers, railway ties, plastic flowerpots, plastic pipe, guardrails, fence posts, and clothing
