Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability means “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Both the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the EPA and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the MDEQ provide information on sustainability and actions you can take as a business or individual.

The County of Monroe promotes sustainability efforts through projects such as the Grow Smart workshops held yearly by a partnership of County Offices and the Solid Waste Program's Environmental Grant Fund.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) was established by the US Federal Government in 1970 to clean-up environmental damage in the country and to continually ensure a safe and healthy environment for citizens.  The EPA oversees research and monitoring, develops and enforces regulations, provides financial assistance to states, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations, promotes environmental education, and publishes information.

To find out about national environmental laws and regulations, visit the US EPA’s Laws and Regulations page.

State

Each state has its own guidelines and procedures for the collection, marketing, and education of recycling.  Go to the US EPA Wastes page to find links to solid and hazardous waste departments in each state.

Click here to be directed to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality page for information specific to our state.
